The Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead are committed to creating people-friendly streets and neighbourhoods that actively encourage walking, cycling and using public transport. This is why we are working together to reduce through traffic across the borough and make areas safer and more pleasant for walking and cycling.
We are proposing the introduction of a bus gate on Shoppenhangers Road. This would close a section of road to all motorised vehicles except for buses and emergency vehicles. The aim is to prevent people from using the area as a cut-through to avoid main roads, which is known as ‘rat running’. The bus gate will still allow access for people walking and cycling.
Reduced through-traffic on residential and school streets will provide safer spaces for cycling and walking whilst maintaining social distancing, as well as lowering noise and air pollution. We want to make your area more pleasant to use, encouraging a shift towards more active and sustainable travel where possible.
This is supporting the Government approach to emergency active travel during the Covid-19 pandemic and we believe these are the right solutions for the borough. We appreciate they may cause some short-term disruption but believe the long-term benefits outweigh any disadvantages.
We want residents views to ensure that the proposed schemes work well for those living in the local area.
What is proposed?
To install a bus gate on Shoppenhangers Road near its junction with Ludlow Road to enable cycling and walking along the length of Shoppenhangers Road between Larchfield and Baywick Road
At the point where the bus gate is installed, it would prevent through-movement of all traffic except buses and emergency vehicles, and those walking and cycling. Everyone will still be able to drive to access their homes and amenities.
Vehicle access will be maintained as follows:
Traffic flow will be maintained in both directions on either side of the bus gate, on Shoppenhangers Road.
Access to the station and Courtlands will be available from north of the bus gate on Shoppenhangers Road and from Braywick Road.
Access to Ludlow Road from Shoppenhangers Road will be maintained via left turn before the bus gate.
From Ludlow Road access will be maintained to Shoppenhangers Road via a right turn only heading southbound.
Access to Desborough College will be maintained from the south.
